Juneteenth Jubilee! Family Day Celebration

Celebrate the Jubilee! Juneteenth is the oldest celebration marking the end of slavery in the United States and this year marks the ninth presentation of Juneteenth events at Telfair Museums. This popular, all-ages event celebrates African American art, history and Gullah-Geechee culture through performances and family activities. This year’s celebration begins with an opening ceremony and performance by Jamal Toure as the African Spirit. The award-winning cultural preservationist, author and performance artist Queen Quet of the Gullah Geechee Nation will bring audiences stories of how the people of Georgia and South Carolina coast. Storytelling will conclude with the noted North Carolina-based artist Mitch Capel, aka Gran’Daddy Junebug. The event also includes children’s art and instrument making activities, demonstrations of painting by artist Amiri Farris, traditional basket making by Gregory Grant, traditional drumming, and a dj for dancing to close the program. A special presentation will also be made to elder Savannah artist Luther Vann. There is something for everyone at this special celebration!
