United States of Love (Poland/Sweden 2016)
SPACE Gallery (9 West Henry St)
tix: $8 (cash only)
In the year 1990, Poland is experiencing its first year of liberation from the Soviet rule, and the four women in Tomasz Wasilewski's film feel it's time to change their lives as well. As the film weaves its four overlapping stories, its title becomes deliberately ironic when the women's pursuits of love are derailed by desperation, obsession, and bitterness. Successfully distributed in the UK and Europe, United States of Love is virtually unknown in the US. Winner of the Silver Bear Prize at the Berlin Film Festival and five awards, including Best Director, at the 2016 Polish Film Festival. Featuring remarkable camera work by the Romanian master, Oleg Mutu. 104 minutes. In Polish with English subtitles.
