The Tybee Post Theater brings back its acclaimed Silent Cinema Concerts program with a screening of Buster Keaton’s “The General,” widely considered one of the best silent film comedies, accompanied by a chamber ensemble of the Savannah Philharmonic and Rodney Sauer on the Steinway grand performing the original score.
Sauer, a national expert in silent film music has been creating and toured the country performing silent film scores using historic music libraries for two decades. This very special program brings together a quartet from the Philharmonic to accompany Sauer’s performance of the score of “The General,” the story of a railroad engineer who is rejected by the Confederate Army and by his sweetheart, Annabelle. But when Northern spies kidnap both Annabelle and The General, his beloved train engine, it sets in motion cinema’s most perfectly structured comic epic.
The program begins with two comedy shorts featuring the best silent film comedians, including “The Cook” starring Buster Keaton and Roscoe “Fatty” Arbuckle.
Sauer will host a talk-back program following the films as we commemorate the 100th anniversary of Buster Keaton acting in the movies!
Saturday, June 17, Two performances 3 pm and 8 pm. Tickets, $15 adults; $7 children
