"But I'm a Cheerleader" presented by The Look Back

  • Savannah LGBT Center 1515 Bull Street Savannah, GA, 31401 United States (map)

Summer camp wasn't something every young queer kid enjoyed being subjected to, but imagine being sent to conversion camp on top of it? That's the story of Megan Bloomfield. A high school cheerleader whose parents suspect, with compelling evidence, that their daughter may be a lesbian and immediately admit her to camp True Directions. Their she is forced to undergo a 5 step program to repair her homosexuality and convert back to being straight.

The cast of characters she meets while there includes actors RuPaul, Clea Duvall, Michelle Williams, Cathy Moriarty as the psycho camp director and Rufio from Hook all grown up and in rare mesh crop top wearing form.

Free admission and concessions for all, with voluntary donations always appreciated!

In partnership with Savannah LGBT Center and Psychotronic Film Society, The Look Back is a platform for queer documentary, experimental, and narrative moving image arts. Curated by Maxine Fishpaw, The Look Back aims to provide a resource for queer cinema in Savannah by engaging the local community with queer theory and representation on an international level through the exhibition of queer-related moving image works from the past and present. However, not all representation is revolution... or is it? As we look forward to a world of queer futurity, The Look Back posits itself in between recognition and acknowledgement of how far we've come, and how far we have yet to go.

Past screenings include: Pedro Almodovar’s Dark Habits, Paragraph 175, Tangerine, Pariah, Keep The River on Your Right, My Life in Pink, and Paris is Burning.
