After four years of Shakespeare set in the decades of days gone by, we have finally caught up to the present day: 2019. Few stories of the Shakespearean canon resonate better with the times we live in than MEASURE FOR MEASURE.
When the Duke of Vienna mysteriously leaves the capital, he puts his deputy, a severe and pious judge named Angelo, in charge of enforcing the law. Angelo, tired of mild enforcement, immediately wages a judicial crackdown on the freedoms of his "impure" citizens. Brothels are shuttered and their "employees" are rounded up. After a young man named Claudio impregnates his fiancee, Angelo makes an example of him by sentencing him to death. Quite possibly the only person who can save Claudio is his virtuous and persuasive sister, Isabella. However, in a political world of secrets and vices, she finds out there may be a price to pay for the life of her brother. It is a shockingly timeless story of harsh Justice versus forgiving Mercy in a toxic society of hypocrisy and judgment.
Set in 2019, we will be highlighting, using Shakespeare's text, the experiences of marginalized people who are victims every day of oppression and abuse of authority. In our world and in Measure for Measure's Vienna, the scales of Justice are tipping out of control and must be righted.
