“Disya WE Land!: Continuing the Land Ownership Legacy of the Gullah/Geechee”

Telfair Museums is pleased to present an evening lecture in celebration of Juneteenth by Queen Quet, who will discuss land ownership among Gullah/Geechee people in the coastal South. Queen Quet Marquetta L. Goodwine is a published author, computer scientist, lecturer, mathematician, historian, columnist, preservationist, environmental justice advocate, environmentalist, film consultant, and “The Art-ivist.” She is the founder of the premiere advocacy organization for the continuation of Gullah/Geechee culture, the Gullah/Geechee Sea Island Coalition.

Queen Quet has spoken on behalf of Gullah/Geechee people at the United Nations and has been a consultant for the National Park Service, an expert commissioner for the U.S. Department of the Interior and Chair of the Gullah/Geechee Cultural Heritage Corridor General Management Plan. A tireless advocate for environmental preservation and justice, she continues to work to “protect the environment and to ensure that diverse groups of people engage in the outdoors and the policies governing them.” Queen Quet has appeared in numerous documentaries and has served as an advisor on Gullah/Geechee culture for feature film and television productions, including the award-winning series Underground. She has received numerous awards including the Order of the Palmetto from the State of South Carolina.

Queen Quet will participate in the opening libation ceremony for the museum’s Juneteenth Kickoff Family Day on June 10 at 1pm, before making her first appearance as the featured Juneteenth Lecturer on June 15.
