In Christmas Eve in Miller’s Point, a genre-defying holiday madcap like no other, which premiered at this year’s Cannes Festival, a family gathers for what could be the last holiday in their ancestral home. Forgoing traditional plot structure and a protagonist, the director Tyler Taormina focuses on creating a feeling and atmosphere rather than conflict or resolution. As a result, it becomes a study of an alternately rowdy and contemplative family Christmas, a warm recollection of a family celebration, a prosperous, free country glimpsed in the rear-view mirror, unlikely to be seen again. Winner of Denver, The Hamptons, Valladolid, and Ghent International film festivals. With Michael Cera (as well as Martin Scorsese’s daughter and Steven Spielberg’s son). 106 minutes.
