2018 Battlefield Memorial March

  • Savannah History Museum 303 Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. Savannah, GA 31401 USA (map)

On Tuesday, October 9th, Coastal Heritage Society will honor the soldiers that fought during the 1779 Battle of Savannah, one of the most significant conflicts during Savannah’s Revolutionary War history and one of the war’s most pivotal battles.

Coastal Heritage Society’s Battlefield Memorial March event will lead guests through the footsteps of soldiers on that historic day in 1779, in celebration of the 239th anniversary. The march begins promptly at 7 am. All march participants will meet in the Savannah History Museum parking lot at 6:45 am. After the march, a wreath laying and remembrance ceremony will be held on Battlefield Park.

This year, Coastal Heritage Society’s Battlefield Memorial March will commemorate the Battle of Savannah with a special tribute to England, including a new England stone dedicated by Ray Okoinski. Two individual memorial stones will also be dedicated, including one for Evan Willings (1760-1819) placed by his descendants, Rollings and Hackett families, and one for Richard Saye, who was mortally wounded on the battlefield, placed by his descendants Henry Pete Coke and family.

“We are thrilled to be featuring several compelling historical narratives during this year’s event! We will be dedicating three battlefield stones, two of which will memorialize individuals who actually fought in the 1779 battle. We hope that the real stories will help bring this history of the event to life for our march participants,” said Emily Beck, Coastal Heritage Society’s Manager of Interpretation. “We are also excited to debut a civilian perspective of the battle as part of our march this year, including portions of a letter written by Lady Anne Prevost, wife of British General Augustin Prevost, which describe her harrowing experience of the battle inside the city with her children.”

This event is free and open to the public. Light breakfast refreshments and coffee will be served for all attendees following the ceremony. The Battlefield Memorial March is made possible thanks to the support from the Georgia HumanitiesCouncil.

Participants of the Battlefield Memorial March are asked to RSVP to dmccall@chsgeorgia.org.
